Peace at last!

Well, after a 3-hour visit with the neurologist last night I did get some answers to my migraine problem.

There are three main headaches one can get: tension, sinus, or cluster.  My pain may originate from one of these three and turn into a migraine within a short amount of time or the migraine hits full force immediately.  In either case, I have been officially diagnosed with migraines.  This is positive news for me because now I can get the proper treatment.

Thankfully I have an episodic migraine and not a chronic one.  The difference? Chronic migraines happen more than 15 times a month for at least three months in a row! Ouch!

I appreciate all who shared their thoughts and experiences with me, as it helped me to gather questions I wouldn’t have thought of and it provided me with support. Thank you.

Treatment: Ellie from Emerald Pie told me about Botox treatments so, of course, I had to ask the specialist! Yes, it’s true…people do get injections every three months for those who suffer from chronic migraines.  Since mine is not chronic, I am not eligible for this treatment. Shucks 🙂

Kelly from My Twice Baked Potato and Laura from As Time Goes…Buy suggested acupuncture. Because I saw a medical doctor, she really wouldn’t give a professional opinion about it so I looked into it myself (Google).  Acupuncture boasts that it reduces inflammation and helps control pain; there are a lot of people that live by this treatment. So, after I’m done seeing the neurologist (I have two more visits), I’ll stop by an acupuncturist to see if this approach would be better.

What I’m doing in the meantime: I took a nerve test last night. It literally felt like I was getting shock injections shot into my body. A scary feeling at first and then it turned into a feeling like you get when you ride a roller coaster.  The doctor was looking for nerve signs that could be the cause of my migraines. A small pen was inserted into my arm so that the doc could ‘listen’ to my nerves. It sounded like Oster during one of his sonograms.

She prescribed an abortive drug for me to take when the migraine hits.  She said there are 10 main drugs that are on the market and she chose this particular one for the sole purpose of trial and error.

I did NOT receive a preventative drug because I didn’t want to have to take something every day. I dislike taking drugs altogether, so you can imagine how thankful I was that she didn’t push me taking a preventative.

I have to go back in two weeks for the nerve test results. From there, we’ll make an appointment for an MRI (brain and neck).

I’m excited to finally get the ball rolling after decades of brushing this pain off as it just being part of life.

  1. Glad to hear some positive news and steps towards the right direction. Hopefully acupuncture and the medication can provide long term relief. I know a friend who will benefit from this post. Very well written I must say. And you are beautiful :)…that’s you in the picture right?

  2. I have had migrains since my early 20s. They are truly horrible. Someone mentioned they can be triggered by the artificial sweetener in diet soda, which I drank all the time. I stopped and my headaches haven’t totally stopped but they are now once every 3 or 4 months instead of 3 or 4 times every month. Much better! I hope you find your answers soon and get some relief too!

    • So glad you were able to control them! I stopped eating sweets altogether for almost two years and it seemed to curtail the amount of migraines I would get. Although, now since Oster’s been born, I can’t stop craving sweets (which is why my migraines might be so often now). I can’t believe I didn’t put those two together before. Thanks!

  3. Glad to hear you’re being listened to at long last. Hope a workable solution is found quickly. Just be careful of medicine. Be sure to ask about the side effects and what signs to look out for if the tablet is causing a reaction. Always go with a list of questions to a consultant, that way you’re sure to come out satisified. I’m just very conscious of this now with the effect some of them have on intolerances. Hope you’re back ‘fighting fit’ soon.

    • I agree…I am very careful with medicine. I am accepting the prescription as an emergency back up when my home remedies do not work.

      As I wait for my test results, I’ll be researching other approaches (acupuncture, yoga, massage, etc) so that I can naturally take care of this problem.

      Years ago my general practitioner prescribed a drug for my migraines and I rarely used it. Only in a dire emergency (like this past 4 day migraine fiasco would have benefited from it).
      Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I am most appreciative of them. And I, too, believe in being cautious with any type of medicine on the market.

  4. I too have just the same to tell you- be careful of the medicines. Why not try some yoga? An expert can be of some help. I also suffered a lot from migraines in my teens but I learned how to overcome them without any medicines.

    • Thank you so much for the advice. I want to take care of my migraine as naturally as I can, having the medicine as an emergency back up. I haven’t looked into yoga but it’s definitely worth a shot!

  5. Yay for a diagnosis! I always enjoy a doctor trying to skirt the acupuncture question. I remember asking about it as a fertility treatment and my doctor was trying desperately to hold in her anger. Hope your day is pain free!

    • Thanks, Travel Lady! Today is pain free…I just got back from the park with a friend and her son. We had a blast 🙂 A beautiful day to start the weekend. Hope yours is going great too.

All the doctors think they can help with migraines – neurologists, dentists, eye doctors, chiropractor, acupuncturists – I’ve tried them all and nothing has prevented my migraines as much as super controlled nutrition has. I definitely encourage you to keep trying all the different methods as you never know which will work for you. I have an abortive prescription with me at all times. Tried the daily preventative one and the side effects were out of control so I had to stop taking it. Good luck to you!

    • I agree that nutrition plays a #1 role in my migraines. I’m pretty healthy and I cook all of our three meals at home. We don’t use preservatives, although I do sneak a couple cookies when Oster goes down for his nap. Although such a small amount, the sugar could be a culprit. I’ll have to adjust my cookie schedule and see if things change.

      I appreciate your comment and am relieved to know that not everyone that suffers from migraines takes the preventative. I’m glad that I have the abortive one, although since it’s my first run at it I hope it works (although, I’d rather hope that I don’t need to take it at all).       • I always feel bonded to others with migraines! lol

        The abortive world will helpfully make your world so better (like it did mine) but the one thing to watch out for is that if your body gets used to it and it stops working as well, don’t be afraid to have your doctor switch it out. I go back and forth with maxalt and imitrex whenever that happens.

      • Ahhh…great advice. Thank you. Hopefully, I’ll need them in only an emergency. It is so refreshing to talk with people who understand and that share experiences.

    • Oxygen would be awesome! Plus it helps your skin to look great. Does your BIL have a prescription for the oxygen? I visited an Oxygen Bar in Vegas a couple of times and it really relieves any muscle tension. I should see if there is any in my area. Great idea! Thank you.

      I worry about prescriptions. In addition to acupuncture, have heard about cranial therapy as possible help.

    • I really don’t want to take any medication, but if it lasts more than two days I will have to take something. As you know, being a full-time SAHM/Teacher you have to be on top of your game 100% of the time. Migraines really are challenging to do this.

      • OMG, I don’t think I could last that long without medication. I’m wiped out from one evening. It’s good to have something you can take when it hits you. I just hope that the tests and/or alternative methods will help you to avoid them in the first place.

    • Thanks, Fen. I can’t believe I waited so long to do this. See what motherhood has done to me? I have never felt the urgency to take care of myself as much as I do now since Oster came around. I really want to be healthy for him.

      • It still amazes me at how motherhood has changed me. Definately want to be a better person, and healthier, more organized…etc etc.
